Dreams & discernment

Starting a dream journal for your spiritual practice

Capture what you remember before trying to decide what the dream means.

Write the dream before the explanation

Keep a notebook or a private note on your phone nearby. When you wake, record the pieces you remember: a place, a conversation, a colour or the feeling at the end. Fragments are fine. Do not fill the missing parts with what you think should have happened.

You can explore dreams as part of spiritual reflection without deciding every dream is a message. Include what was happening in your life and what you watched or read recently. That context helps you understand why certain images may have appeared.

Use the same few details

An entry might say: 'Dreamed of missing a train. Felt rushed. Had been worried about tomorrow's appointment.' Later, you can reflect on the theme without pretending the dream predicted the appointment.

  • Date and remembered details.
  • Feelings during and after the dream.
  • Relevant events from the previous day.
  • Possible meanings, kept separate from the record.

Let patterns develop naturally

Review several entries rather than forcing meaning from one striking image. If you remember nothing, write that and move on. A journal should help you notice your own experience, not make sleep feel like a nightly test.
